The In-Between Week

I’ve always found the week between Christmas and New Year rather curious.

Depending on which country you live in, you may find heaps of people going on leave. In the UK and Australia, this is shopping week. There’re big sales to take advantage of (Or do you think perhaps, just maybe, that it’s the shops taking advantage of you?)

Some offices may close entirely this week. Those who at work may be in for a quiet time (thank goodness!). There’s less to do. It’s an opportunity for long lunches or long chats over coffee with colleagues.

It’s an odd in-between time between two major celebrations. One religious. The other secular. Although even the Christian one is celebrated by those of other religions for it’s morphed, for so many people, into a cultural (and very commercial) event.

After all, who doesn’t want presents?

So as I sit alone in my office… I’d like to wish you a Happy and Merry In-Between Week!

  1. Happy New Year To you Tungku.

For Malaysia, i have some up-dates for you. our schools now open earlier. officially, schools start on 4 Jan, 12. But, the first-year kindergarten kids started yesterday, just to familiarize them with the school environment before they go into their books. I guess, it is for them to cry until they feel enough, then only they will concentrate to learn…

First year secondary students have to attend and “report” their presence to their respective schools today. Primary kids will start on the 4th, next week.

When I attended school some 30 yrs ago, everybody went to school on the same day.

So, the exodus was during last week (I was in Nepal), this week, the traffic chaos starts again.

  2. Daniel – The truth is that I can’t remember when school started for the year when I was back in St John’s. All I recall is that it was a sad event!
